iPhone App Store widens its lead over Android Market, but Apple denied court injunction to prevent Amazon from using term "App Store."
Users of Apple's iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch are an app-hungry lot, according to Apple. The company announced Thursday that more than 15 billion applications have been downloaded by smartphone and tablet users. There are now more than 425,000 applications in the App Store, with 100,000 designed specifically for the iPad.
"In just three years, the revolutionary App Store has grown to become the most exciting and successful software marketplace the world has ever seen," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior VP of worldwide product marketing in a statement. The 15 billion apps were downloaded by the more than 200 million users of iOS devices in 90 countries around the world. The average user has downloaded 75 applications
Apple also noted that it has paid developers a total of more than $2.5 billion for their applications. Apple takes a 30% cut for applications sold through its App Store. The developers get to keep 70% of the revenue.
The App Store averages about 24 million downloads per day.
